Anyone who talks to Thomas Dannwolf will notice his smug, slightly self-deprecating manner, coupled with a clear enjoyment of technical tasks. And in telling stories.
„My dad was an industrial mechanic. Maybe that's why I have the desire to unlock the innermost secrets of technical equipment. In any case, even as a child I always had to look inside the devices and started modifying radios at the age of ten. When I could listen to the police or fire brigade radio, it was just great. I loved that.“
No wonder that after leaving school, he decided to pursue a career in which he could live out this enthusiasm to his heart's content: He started out as a radio and television technician and continued his training. Today, Thomas Dannwolf works in dataTec's Technical Competence Centre. Here he advises customers on complex measurement tasks and supports his colleagues in the field with their technically demanding tasks.
He lost his private tinkerer's heart early on to a very special computer that was extremely popular in the 1980s: the Commodore 64, or C64 for short - also known as the „bread box“ due to its somewhat clunky design. After all, the C64 was the best-selling home computer in the world at the time, with well over ten million units sold.
It goes without saying that the proud C64 owner also quickly took this technology under his wing. „For example, I cracked the copy protection on the floppy discs and made sure that I could use them on both sides. And of course I unscrewed my hardware and tinkered, soldered and fiddled with it.“
„Even as a child, I wanted to reveal the technical devices their innermost secrets. their innermost secrets.“
He even used his technical expertise to finance his driving licence. „Back then, I met a professor from Bad Urach who wanted to digitise his H0 model railway. I exposed and etched circuit boards for him and my dad drilled the holes. I was able to pay for my driving lessons with the money I earned.“
Today, Thomas Dannwolf has a few C64s, a Commodore printer and lots of accessories at home. „To repair these things, you need measurement technology. If the colour is gone, for example, I have to find the colour frequency with an oscilloscope. Or I have to measure voltage, current or resistance with a multimeter. Of course, it's simply brilliant that I not only have access to such measurement technology at dataTec, but also use it on a daily basis.“
His demands on himself are clear: „If something is broken, it will be repaired. And if a customer has a technical problem, it gets solved.“
