„I repair everything my family breaks“, ...
... says Thomas Schmiedecke. And smiles to himself. The 55-year-old electrical engineer is a handyman with heart and soul. Part-time. In his main job, he supports dataTec customers as an expert on site when technical problems need to be solved.
He covers a wide area around his home town of Borken, which includes North Rhine-Westphalia, northern Hesse and the northern Palatinate.
Thomas Schmiedecke's career is remarkable – and when he talks about it, it quickly becomes clear that in addition to his passion for tinkering and working, he also enjoys working for people. And an almost insatiable thirst for knowledge.
After training as a telecommunications technician and a few years in this role at the former Deutsche Bundespost, he completed a second apprenticeship as an electrician and joined a small mechanical engineering company in Borken. „I was the electrical specialist there, but I also did practically all the other work involved in mechanical engineering.“
He probably inherited his talent for craftsmanship. „My father was also an electrical engineer, but he also repaired most of his cars himself, for example. That inspired me even as a child.“
One constant in his professional life is further training. He has been a state-certified electrical engineer since 2019 and looks after dataTec customers in his region far beyond the usual. „In my work, it's only natural that I'm constantly talking to very technology-oriented people. At the latest when my customers realize how much fun I generally have solving technical problems, we almost inevitably start talking about private topics in the field of technology. And when hobbies and work mix in this way, it naturally also makes business dealings easier.“

Incidentally, Thomas Schmiedecke has owned a motorhome for some time now - an Eldorado for a handyman like him. „I'm currently in the process of equipping the vehicle with a solar system so that we can be as self-sufficient as possible when on the road. It goes without saying that both the testing and measuring equipment I work with at dataTec and my knowledge serve me well“
Among other things, he uses PV installation testers to measure the angle of incidence of the sun as well as the string current and characteristic curve of the solar module. „I can use the thermographic camera to determine how heavily loaded the cables are and where, for example, the contact resistances are particularly high. And, of course, my Duspol digital voltage tester is always in use.“
