Frank Gloessner's passion: solving complex technical tasks.

Of oscilloscopes and frequency generators – when work and leisure merge.

It is always about understanding technical tasks and finding good solutions.

His enthusiasm goes back to his childhood: Frank Gloessner's grandfather was a radio and television technician. "He had a hobby room full of oscilloscopes, monitors and electronic components in the cellar. That has really fascinated me ever since I was a child." The logical consequence: Frank Gloessner studied optoelectronics and put his knowledge into practice by building laser projectors and staging laser shows.

"Whether it's my hobby, amateur radio, or my work in the technical sales department at dataTec: It is always about understanding technical tasks and finding good solutions. It makes me feel like the proverbial fish in the water."

And if, like Frank Gloessner, you have a soft spot for test and measurement technology, then the road to becoming an amateur radio operator is not far. He has been pursuing this hobby since 2013 – and builds his own equipment, just like any real radio amateur. He generates electrical oscillations with frequency generators, makes them visible with oscilloscopes or analyses bandwidth and spectral purity with a spectrum analyser. "There are clear specifications for the bandwidth that you are not allowed to exceed as a radio amateur." And the spectral purity tells him whether he is unintentionally transmitting in unwanted frequency ranges.

"For me, hobby and profession are basically one and the same. At dataTec, I talk to people I don't know about technical content. That is also the case when using amateur radio. You reach people who are interested in this technology just by choosing the medium."

Most of the time, he says, he interacts with people who are looking for a solution in the field of test and measurement technology, both in amateur radio and in his job. "These are often very complex tasks. So, I need technical expertise to understand the callers' issues and work out a solution together with them." It is not uncommon for the experts at dataTec to test the solution they are considering, and only offer it to the customer once it works. "If we can finally solve his problem, you get a great sense of achievement. – on both sides."

Sometimes the radio amateur hears the question: "Why don't you just use the phone instead of radioing?" His answer: "That's about the same as asking a marathon runner why he doesn't take the car." One thing is clear: Whether hobby or profession - success thrives not least on the enthusiasm for the cause.
