In conjunction with a network analyzer, for example, the J2140A attenuator is used for two main applications. One of these applications is to attenuate the oscillator signal. Although it may seem strange, a common mistake is that the oscillator signal is too large and overloads the input mixer. Therefore, most analyzers have the option of reducing the output amplitude, although this reduction is still not enough for accurate small signal measurements. The correct oscillator amplitude should be just above the noise level.

The second application for using an attenuator is to increase the dynamic range of the device. In some cases, such as measuring the very high gain (open loop) of an operational amplifier (100 dB and more is not uncommon), attenuation is necessary, which increases the measuring range of the meter.
