The module is specially designed for analyzing the discharge processes of batteries. With a DUT (device under test), e.g. an e-book, a cell phone, an MP3 player or another mobile device, the N6781A can be used to analyze the discharge curve and the discharge process of the battery. The advantage of this module is that it has a programmable output resistance and a digital voltmeter. This makes the combination of the basic device and the module a unique test system in the industry for applications such as testing the discharge process of a battery in a mobile device. The 14585A software supports this configuration and offers further measurement options.
The measurement system is characterized by the fact that dynamic processes, such as battery discharge, can be measured with high precision without transients or distortions during measurement range switching. If the battery voltage of the DUT is reduced by the discharge, the SMU automatically and seamlessly selects the current and voltage measurement range that allows the best possible accuracy. A patented technology that Keysight (formerly Agilent's electronic measurement technology) calls "Seamless Measurement Ranging".
Of particular note with this N6781A module is that, for example, a very large current step can be measured without switching a measurement range. Such a measurement is important when asking the question: How high is the quiescent current in "standby mode" and how high is the inrush current or the inrush current peak; what happens during this time? With the N6781A module in particular, it is possible to make very precise measurements of, for example, the inrush current of a disk drive or the switch-on of a Bluetooth headset. Current differences from the nA to the A range (3A measuring range) can be easily measured and displayed. No other system on the market offers this type of measurement capability and is patented by Keysight (formerly Agilent's electronic measurement technology). It is also possible to determine whether a battery-operated device is being switched on and off unnecessarily due to software errors.
In combination with the 18-bit digitizer, the effective resolution of the SMU is increased to 28 bits. This is not offered by any other manufacturer. The high resolution offers you a unique display of the energy and current consumption processes of your DUT - from the nA to the A range.
