Keysight Battery Emulation Portfolio.
A battery emulator is a device that simulates the behavior of a real battery. It works by providing a controlled and programmable electrical load to mimic the characteristics of a battery during various charge and discharge cycles. Choose the right Keysight Battery Emulation Solution for your application.
Measurement Technology for Battery Emulations with Low-Power Consumption (< 200 W).
One of the engineer's tasks is to emulate the battery in various states in order to test it with regard to the design, software and firmware of the device. This test covers a wide range of test scenarios using a combination of hardware and software, without having to wait for a real battery to charge and discharge. This test confirms that the capacity and energy values of the battery match the data sheet and that the runtime corresponds to the device specifications.
When you select the right meters along with PathWave BenchVue battery testing and emulation software, you can meet your low power application up to < 200 W. Extend and validate battery life and choose the right battery emulation solution for your application.
The Software.
With the Keysight BV9211B PathWave BenchVue battery test and emulation software, you can quickly determine the impact of critical factors on battery life. These factors include determining the impact of hardware changes, software and firmware updates, ambient temperature and battery age on battery life. You can use these insights to improve the design of your device and extend battery life. Another benefit of Keysight software is to validate battery life information by performing a run-down analysis and simulating the battery discharge of your device.
The Hardware.
The compact E36731A battery emulator with BV9211B PathWave BenchVue software provides a test environment in which you can easily perform battery tests and battery emulations. You can charge and discharge a battery and automatically create battery profiles under different test conditions. Create profiles under different test conditions, which you can then emulate to emulate the different states of charge (SoC) of your device under test (DUT). You can also order the E36731A and the BV9211B as a package E36731ABV.
The Keysight N6700C Series Low-Profile Modular Power System (MPS) is a 1U (rack height), multi-output programmable system that allows you to create a 1- to 4-channel DC power supply or electronic load system optimized to meet specific test requirements.
The N6705C DC power analyzer is also modular and offers unmatched productivity gains in source or load and measurement of DC voltage and current in your DUT by integrating up to four advanced power supplies and additional DMM, oscilloscope, arbitrary waveform and data logger functions.
The N6781A and N6785A Source/Measure Units (SMU) modules for N67xxC are specifically designed for battery discharge analysis, enabling visualization of current discharge from nA to A in one pass and one image, providing insights for exceptional battery life. Whether the device under test is an e-book reader, MP3 player, cell phone or pacemaker, the SMUs offer the best advanced features on the market for battery discharge analysis with their seamless measurement range, programmable output resistance and additional DVM.
The N6781A (left) is a 2-quadrant source/measure unit with up to 20 V, up to 3 A and 20 W. The N6785A (right) with several measuring ranges, up to 20 V, up to 8 A, up to 80 W, is suitable for battery discharge analysis of large mobile, battery-operated devices.
The N6700C and N6705C support more than 50 modules that you can combine for different test applications. Battery emulation is just one of many supported use cases. The E36731A, on the other hand, is specially optimized for battery emulation and profiling.
Key features of the BV9211B software include profiling and emulating batteries, performing current drain analysis and performing battery run-down and cycling tests. The software runs on the N6700C DC power supply system and the N6705C DC power supply analyzer as well as the E36731A emulator and profiler for low power applications. Compare the three in the overview and choose the right solution for your application.

Target Applications.
To validate and extend the battery life of low-power devices, you can use either the N6700C DC power supply system / N6705C DC power analyzer with an N6781A / 85A source/measure unit module or the E36731A emulator and profiler with BV9211B software. However, the ideal applications for advanced research and development (R&D) testing are different for the three hardware platforms.
Power states E36731A
The E36731A is ideal for advanced testing of devices with less complex power waveforms, such as Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices with limited functionality. The E36731A can also support up to 200 W of power for applications such as power tools.
Power states N67xxC
The N6700C and N6705C are better suited for applications with complex power states where advanced measurement functions are important (e.g. smartphones). Their four outputs are also valuable for advanced applications as they allow you to test up to four subsystems simultaneously with an emulated battery.
Summary.
Some engineers using the N6705C for advanced R&D testing or the N6700C for ATE systems in R&D, design validation and manufacturing may find the E36731A suitable for crude battery testing. The BV9211B battery test and emulation software is a powerful solution that can significantly improve the battery performance of your device. Minimizing battery consumption can accelerate innovation and enable smaller designs and IoT categories.
Keysight thus offers a hardware portfolio that works together with the BV9211B software, so you can choose the right solution for your low-power application needs. Furthermore, the BV9211B allows the connection and control of only one measurement device. With the BV9210B you can connect and control up to four measuring devices simultaneously.
