Applications
Gravity during rocket launches is best measured with modular measurement technology from NI.
As part of a research programme, the NI technology was confronted with a powerful opponent: microgravity. But in the face of this physical phenomenon, an NI solution was able to surpass itself and deliver impressive results.

The task: analysis of signal molecules.
Rockets have been launched from the Esrange Space Center in Sweden since 1977 to study microgravity conditions as part of the TEXUS/MAXUS research programme. Individual on-board and ground hardware, including specific software, is required for each flight for safe control of the rockets and to obtain reliable measurement results. The team relied here on NI's modular measurement technology.
The challenge: coordinated data structures.
The experiment with a rocket made high demands on the ideal measurement solution. On the one hand, the rocket itself had to be equipped with the necessary technology to carry out the measurements and to transmit the results wirelessly to the ground station without data loss. At the same time, it was necessary to optimally equip the ground station to receive and process these measurement results.
The solution: modular measurement technology from NI.
The research team relied on NI's LabVIEW system development software, which facilitates automation and customisation of systems using analysis algorithms provided. Both the ground station and the rocket itself were equipped with the software, this minimising troubleshooting during integration. On the ground, a CompactRIO system (cRIO for short) from NI additionally ensured powerful processing of the measurement data as well as optimum coupling of the two independently developed sub-systems, FLIGHT and GROUND.

LabVIEW
The LabVIEW software and programming environment facilitates the integration of hardware in measurement and control processes. Its intuitive operation and compatibility with third-party hardware make it a flexible helper for complex tasks.
CompactRIO
The cRIO-9149 is an embedded controller that is ideal for demanding control, regulation and monitoring applications. The robust, fanless controller has a real-time processor, an FPGA and various connections, including an Ethernet and a serial interface.
