The impulse voltage test is the only way to detect shorted turns and insulation faults within a winding, even before the fault affects the electrical specifications of the test object. When a charged capacitor is quickly connected to the winding to be tested, the energy stored in the capacitor is discharged into the inductance. This results in a sinusoidal, damped oscillation. The frequency and the amplitude are typical for the test object.
