The channels of the NI-9401 digital I/O module can be configured as inputs or outputs in steps of 4 bits. This allows the NI-9401 to be programmed for three configurations: eight digital inputs, eight digital outputs, or four digital inputs and four digital outputs. Because of the reconfigurable I/O technology (CompactRIO only), the LabVIEW FPGA module can be used to program the NI-9401 module and implement custom high-speed counters/timers, digital communication protocols, pulse generation and more. Each channel has transient isolation between the I/O channels and the backplane.

The digital modules of the C series provide digital input and output signals for the CompactDAQ and CompactRIO hardware systems. The modules support various industrial sensors, switches and devices. They can operate with different voltages and logic levels, making the modules flexible for many benchtop and industrial applications.
The digital modules offer isolation options and have power consuming and power supplying functions to provide additional protection for your digital I/O design. In conjunction with the CompactRIO system, you can also use LabVIEW FPGA to develop high-speed counters/timers or digital communication protocols, for example. The NI-DAQmx driver included in the scope of delivery simplifies the configuration and execution of measurements.
