The energy we use has its price, but this not only has a monetary price, but also an environmental cost. Greenhouse gases are a major contributor to this. Climate change and energy production account for two thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions. Experts expect electricity demand to rise by more than 40% in 2030.
Although emissions are expected to remain unchanged, this is far too high to meet the climate pledges made by over 150 countries at the COP21 conference in Paris in 2015.
As new technologies develop slowly, experts claim that the agreed greenhouse gas emissions for this century will be reached shortly after 2030. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has formulated a "bridging strategy" to avoid this early peak in greenhouse gas emissions. An important part of this strategy is improving energy efficiency in industry.
